I recently spend some time in Yunan to celebrate Chinese new year. In Yunnan, my life slowed down and I realised how much chronic stress activates the sympathetic nervous system.
In that state:
• Blood flow shifts away from digestion
• Gastric activity can slow (which may affect stomach acid levels)
• Gut motility can change (food may move more slowly — contributing to bloating or constipation)

Over time, this affects how efficiently we use nutrients —
and can show up as reduced immunity and metabolism.

• Greens and fibre-rich fruits to nourish good gut bacteria

Last Wednesday, we hosted a Unite Students event to talk about gut health — and how a healthier gut can empower the way we live, study and show up for ourselves.  It was a small fireside chat, just ten people, but the kind that felt warm, honest and meaningful. Real stories. Real questions. Last Wednesday, we hosted a Unite Students event to talk about gut health — and how a healthier gut can empower the way we live, study and show up for ourselves.  It was a small fireside chat, just ten people, but the kind that felt warm, honest and meaningful. Real stories. Real questions. I always thought: “Not yet. I’m not ready.”

But trusting your gut often means stepping forward before you feel prepared.

As someone pitching in my second language, speaking clearly, quickly and from the heart is still one of my biggest challenges.
But I pressed the bell. It rang. And I began.

My mum used to make this soup whenever I felt run-down or had tummy pain as a kid. She called it Yang Wei Tang 养胃汤 “to nourish the gut.”

At the time, I thought it was just comfort food. Now I understand the science behind it- prebiotic fibres from yam and apple, collagen from the broth, all supporting the gut lining.

It’s funny how the foods that once healed us emotionally often turn out to heal us biologically too. 💜
